02 07 2019 – Local, regional and international journalists and social media influencers on Tuesday toured some key sites of Rwanda’s Liberation Struggle, as part of ongoing activities to mark the 25th anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation – Kwibohora25, before meeting with President Paul Kagame for an interactive discussion on Kwibohora25.

The tour started at Gabiro where members of the press were briefed about the initial phase (Phase I) of the struggle by Maj. Gen (Rtd) Sam Kaka and IGP George Rwigamba.

The second stop of Kwibohora25 media tour was Musanze District, formerly Ruhengeri where the RPA abandoned conventional war tactics back to guerrilla warfare. This was after the arrival of the new Chairman of the High Command and the current President, Paul Kagame.

The third stop of the tour continued at National Liberation Museum Park that tells the story of the Rwandan Liberation struggle that brought an end to the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi. The museum illustrates the sequence of events before, during, and after the struggle. The place hosts the bunker which protected the then Chairman of High Command, now President of the Republic of Rwanda, H.E Paul Kagame.

The tour was concluded with an interactive discussion with President Kagame, during which the President stressed the role of leadership in helping a community to successfully get through the challenges.

When bad things happen to you, you either give up and lose hope, or you are hardened by it and find some sense of hope that helps you improve. Leadership matters because it addresses the problem at hand. You introduce a new mindset that helps address the problem. The people need to understand that they need and should do things differently. You’ve got to do something that will give tangible results and help as a motivation. When people start experiencing change in their lives, you start getting practical results that change lives. Be confident trust that you can do something. Before you go around looking for a solution, start with yourself, look for support only when you feel like you’ve exhausted all your ways” President Kagame said.

On Rwanda’s progress, President Kagame said

“I don’t think Rwanda had made enough progress. We have to keep doing more and better. There should never be a point where we feel like we have arrived. We should keep going, even when we are doing well. We have to always be worried about something: either of doing more or be worried that what you have achieved can slide back.”

Known as Kwibohora, Liberation Day is held every year on 4 July, marking the day the Rwandan Patriotic Army ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Held under the theme “Together We Prosper,” this year’s celebration is an opportunity to recommit to Rwanda’s vision for a peaceful, united, prosperous and self-reliant nation.
